"Experiences of social inequalities from Latin America"

The application form can be found below. Download this call for entries here.

The Interdisciplinary Research Network on the Americas (RIIA) (based at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg) and trAndeS – Postgraduate Program on Sustainable Development and Social Inequalities in the Andean Region (based at Freie Universität Berlin and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) invite interested parties to participate in the photographic contest “Experiences of social inequalities from Latin America.”

Latin America is the most unequal region in the world. These deep asymmetries owe their origins as much to the colonial legacy as to more recent domestic and global processes and occurrences. They are expressed in economic, political and ecological inequalities that are entangled and reinforced with sharp inequalities among groups (especially ethnic and of gender) and territories. These multidimensional inequalities seriously hinder the efforts to generate higher levels of well-being and sustainable development as envisaged in the UN 2030 Agenda: poverty rates remain high, environmental degradation has increased significantly, aggravated by the effects of climate change, as well as social conflict and violence.

Recently, these multidimensional inequalities have been in the midst of the debates raised by popular uprisings and social movements, for example in Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador, which demand systemic and structural changes. Furthermore, the diverse experiences and responses of different sectors of society to the challenges posed by the global pandemic caused by the Covid-19 outbreak show incisively how inequality affects the lives of millions of people who do not have stable incomes and access to a quality health system.

Through photography, this contest seeks to show first-hand experiences in unequal contexts, in their different dimensions and shades, emphasizing local insights and perspectives, as well as initiatives that aim to contribute to the reduction of inequalities. Valuing the power of images and self-representation narratives, this contest seeks to extend a space for self-expression of contextualized and particular issues, as well as collaborative initiatives and proposals for changes.

This contest hopes to promote dialogue by presenting works that explore the relationships between the socio-economic, socio-political, and socio-environmental inequalities that prevail in Latin America and the challenges they present in achieving sustainable development levels according to the framework of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
