Climate change in the Andean countries: Ecosystem, socio-political and economic implications

Third Conference of the ADLAF Andean Countries Working Group, 14-15 November 2019, Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Alexander Universität, Erlangen-Nürnberg.

Call for Papers
The "Andean Countries" Working Group of the German Association for Research on Latin America (ADLAF) will hold its third conference on 14 and 15 November 2019 at the Institute of Geography of the Friedrich-Alexander Universität in Erlangen, Nürnberg. On this occasion, the focus will be on the consequences of climate change on the physical environment as well as on the society and policies of the Andean countries.
The conference is aimed at researchers from all disciplines of social, human and natural sciences, who are related to the Andean region in its broadest sense or to one of its component countries and who conduct research related to climate change and its effects on ecosystems or on their social, cultural, economic and environmental repercussions.

The rise in extreme weather events caused by climate change entails an increase in natural disasters in the Andean countries, but also long-term changes in water regimes and in the capacity of the region's aquifers. All this leads to serious alterations in ecosystems and infrastructures, leading to new socio-economic policies for disaster prevention and exploitation of the resources affected (agriculture and fisheries, tourism, mineral resources), as well as a possible increase in conflicts (local, regional and international) as a result of the changes that will take place in the region. In the same way, climate change itself is perceived and confronted in a very different way by certain indigenous communities. Their vulnerability and resilience to these changes is also the object of this call.

The main objective of the conference is to promote the exchange of knowledge between the different disciplines. The papers will be published in a special issue of a Latin American journal (peer-reviewed) in Spanish or English. Doctoral students and post-doctoral students interested in presenting a paper should send a 300-word abstract of their proposal in Spanish, English or German by March 1, 2019. It should be addressed to Andrés Gerique-Zipfel (andres.gerique-zipfel@fau.de).
